People call out my name in the village. We are just crossing paths for a moment and yet it feels special every time. Like goodness matters. Because I am being seen. What are the conditions that create this sense of connection and caring? Walking, not driving, small streets, not highways, and towns, not cities, and a value system based in community and family. It’s not about being rich or famous or who you know. It isn’t about having a big house or a fancy car. It’s about people, not things. How we value ourselves and others is what enables us to see. But if we are always driving, always in a hurry, never taking the time to make eye contact and smile at someone as she or he goes by, we remain stuck in dead end reality that says no one really matters.
